Weekly Newsletter - 3rd November 2024

Dear Friends,

Welcome to our weekly liturgies. Our Saturday morning talks (10 .00- 12.00) on the Christian mystics conclude this coming Saturday with a lecture on Fr. Pedro Arrupe, S.J., late Superior-General of the Jesuits (1965-1983). Many thanks to all who attended these talks. It is very encouraging to see so many give up their Saturday mornings to come.

The next book in our reading club will be Paul – A Biography by the renowned scripture scholar, N.T. Wright, former Bishop of Durham. In this detailed biography, Wright traces the career of St. Paul from being a persecutor of the fledging Church, through his missionary journeys to various communities, to his likely death as a Christian martyr in Rome under the Emperor Nero. I will give an introductory talk on St. Paul on Monday, November 4th (10.00 – 12.00).

 Fr. Brendan

SYNOD 2024-Latest updates

God will never abandon his people or his project of the Good News in Jesus. In the words of Jesus at the end of Matthew’s Gospel: “And remember, I am with you always, tothe end of the age.” (Matthew 28:20) There is much to be done and much to be changed. But nothing will ever “separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.” (Romans 8:39). The church has always been evolving, letting goof what seemed at one time essential and discovering new ways to respond to God. Here, history is the great teacher. The time of apparent crisis has always the time of opportunity. For updates on the progress of the Synod, please pickup a copy of the Synod Weekly Newsletter at the back of the Church or visithttps://dublindiocese.ie/synod2024/

SYNOD UPDATE

Marking theconclusion of the XVIth Ordinary General Assembly of the Synod of Bishops, PopeFrancis presided over the Synod's closing Mass on Sunday, 27 October, in SaintPeter's Basilica.

In his homily,Pope Francis encourages us to be like Bartimaeus and "entrust ourblindness to the Lord" in order to be "a missionary Church that walkswith her Lord through the streets of the world."

The Pope warnedthat "a sedentary Church" that "confines itself to the marginsof reality" risks remaining blind and will "fail to grasp the urgencyof giving a pastoral response to the many problems of our world."
