Weekly Newsletter - 2nd June 2024

Dear parishioners,

At the first Mass of  this year’s novena to the Sacred Heart, Fr Michael Kirwan said that the image  of the Sacred Heart allows us to visibly see God’s love for us. In the statue  of Jesus, the Sacred Heart, we see that God is open-hearted and there is  plenty of room for everyone in there.

My thanks Fr Michael  Kirwan SJ, Fr Tom Casey SJ and Fr Tom Layden SJ for being our preachers and  to the little army of volunteers who make the novena a very special occasion.  It runs until Friday so please do spread the word and come if you can.

We are also delighted to  have a Jesuit novice, Sean McMahon, with us for a few months. Sean is  volunteering both in the parish and with the Peter McVerry Trust.

 Every blessing,

 Fr Niall

FEAST OF CORPUS CHRISTI

The  Feast of Corpus Christi is a time for Christians to remember that God will  meet their basic needs to eat and to be filled with the joy and amazement of  receiving loving nourishment from Jesus Christ. The Eucharist must also move Christians  to action.

JOYCE AND THE JESUITS – BLOOMSDAY, SUNDAY 16TH JUNE 2024 AT 12.30 PM.

ST. FRANCIS XAVIER’S CHURCH

For the 120th anniversary of the first Bloomsday,  in association with The Joyce Centre, Dublin 1, actor, writer and broadcaster  Gerry McArdle, who plays Buck Mulligan in the 1982 RTÉ recording of Ulysses  (available online), puts together a 60 minute programme of readings from  Dubliners, A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man and Ulysses which  highlights the Joyce/Jesuit connections. He is joined by Raphael Kelly, and  singer Suzanne Mangan. The event is hosted and narrated by popular RTÉ  newscaster and television personality, Eileen Dunne, who, like the other  artists involved, freely donates her time and talents.

It’s a short programme, packed full of  entertaining content that eschews the academic, intellectual approach to  Joyce, and concentrates on the enjoyment of some very accessible and funny  writing. Admission is free. Donations for the upkeep of St. Francis Xavier’s  Church gratefully accepted.
