Weekly Newsletter - 20th October 2024

Dear Friends,

Welcome to our weekly liturgies. Our Saturday morning talks (10 .00-11.00am) on the Christian mystics continue to be very well attended. Next Saturday will be on the American social activist and founder of The Catholic Worker, Dorothy Day (1897-1980)

Just to remind you again that the Health & Safety inspectors have advised us strongly that we need a protective parapet to be constructed on top of the existing railing of the choir gallery. The railing, as it is, is deemed to be too low and, therefore, dangerous. Our architect is investigating the possibility of a wooden or glass parapet. Any contribution towards this construction would be gratefully received. Thank you!

 Fr. Brendan

WORLD MISSION SUNDAY- 20TH OCTOBER

This weekend parishes worldwide celebrate World Mission Sunday. Thank you for supporting in whatever way you can, and please remember it is more than an appeal for financial help. Missionaries also need spiritual support.

SYNOD 2024-Latest updates

As we head into the fourth week of the Universal Synod in Rome, the readings today remind us to affirm the faith we have been given, and to remember that it is from this faith, that we receive the love and hope that we need to be Christians in the world today. It’s a world that is often very challenging to us and even sometimes proves unwelcoming to any person of faith.

For updates on the progress of the Synod, please pick up a copy of the Synod Weekly Newsletter at the back of the Church or visit https://dublindiocese.ie/synod2024/

SAINT OF THE COMING WEEK

Saint Pope John Paul II – Tuesday, 22nd October

He needs little introduction! Just to remind you of some facts. John Paul II was Pope for over twenty-six years, from 22 October 1978 until his death on 2 April 2005. He was ordained bishop of Krakow in 1958, and took a significant part in the Second Vatican Council (1962-65). As Pope, he made apostolic journeys to 110countries, including Ireland (29th September to 2nd October 1979). Perhaps, history will find most remarkable his contribution to the demise of the Communist empire. John Paul was canonised on 27th April 2014 along with Pope John XXIII.

BISHOPS’PASTORAL LETTER ON IMMIGRATION

Excerpt of the Irish Catholic Bishops’ Conference pastoral letter on welcoming the immigrant:

 “A Hundred Thousand Welcomes?

Ireland’s tradition of hospitality - céad míle fáilte - faces challenges due to rising immigration, which has exposed longstanding societal issues like housing, homelessness, and gaps in social services. These challenges existed before immigration became a prominent issue, but some fearful and angry voices now call for closing borders. However, the Irish people, conscious of our own history of migration and Christian faith, must continue to welcome newcomers. Many immigrants bring valuable skills and talents, while others seek support for a better future”.

THE EUCHARIST -WHAT DO WE BELIEVE ...AND WHAT DIFFERENCE DOES IT MAKE?

Fáinche Ryan

Zoom - Thursday Oct 31st, 2024 - 8.00 p.m.

This presentation will seek to explain something of the mystery of this gift of the Eucharist, of what it means for a baptised person to participate in the Eucharist, and also the impact of what it means to say that the Church makes the Eucharist while at once the Eucharist makes the Church. The presentation aims to be both instructive and challenging and to go some way toward addressing the many questions put to me over the years about this mystery we receive.
