Weekly Newsletter - 13th October 2024

Dear Friends,

Welcome to our weekly liturgies. Our Saturdaymorning talks on the Christian mystics continue to be very well attended.  Next Saturday will be on the Swiss mystic,Adrienne von Speyer (1902-1967).

There will be the first meeting ofthe Parish Council here in Gardiner Street this coming Monday (October 14th) at7.00pm.

Just to remind you again that the Health & Safety inspectors have advised us strongly that we need a protective parapet to be constructed on top of the existing railing of the choir gallery.  The railing, as it is, is deemed to be too low and, therefore, dangerous. Our architect is investigating the possibility of a wooden or glass parapet.  Any contribution towards this construction would be gratefully received. Thank you!

Fr. Brendan

SAINT OF THE COMING WEEK

Saint Teresa of Avila- Tuesday,15th October

Teresa was born in Avila, Spain in 1515.  She entered a Carmelite convent when she was twenty but, some years later, she resolved to found a convent under the original and strict form of the Carmelite Rule.  The nuns (and later friars) became known as the ‘Discalced Carmelites’ as we have here in Clarendon Street and in other Carmelite convents throughout Ireland. Teresa travelled up and down Spain founding convents, seventeen in all.  Teresa’s writings on the spiritual life are famous: The Life; The Way of Perfection; The Book of Foundations; The Interior Castle.  With Saint Catherine of Siena, Teresa was one of the first two women to be declared a Doctor of the Church by Pope Saint Paul VI in 1970.

Let nothing disturb you,

Let nothing frighten you,

All things are passing away:

God never changes.

Patience obtains all things

Whoever has God lacks nothing;

God alone suffices.

 St. Teresa of Avila

SYNOD 2024- Latest updates

What is at stake at the assembly in Rome? At first glance, it seems to involve a new way of living the community of the faith, the Church, locally and universally.

Perhaps more fundamentally, we are being asked to encounter Jesus again (as Pope Francis invited us all in his first letter) and then we go on to ask how can we best to serve the Gospel, and make the Good News really good news in our time? Let us continue to pray for the Synod.

For updates on the progress of the Synod, please pick up a copy of the Synod Weekly Newsletter at the back of the Church or visit https://dublindiocese.ie/synod2024/

NOVEMBER MESSENGER

In the November Messenger, Gerard Condon considers the afterlife; Jim Corkery SJ reminds us that although death does separate us, it doesn’t remove us completely from one another; Terence Harrington OFM writes about the importance of kindness and the symbiotic relationship between grief and love; and Anne Marie Lee highlights relationships and ritual as important factors in the spiritual life of the family.

Brief biographies of Madeleine Delbrel, Augustus Pugin and St Alphonsus Rodriguez, along with our regular features, complete this engaging November Messenger. Available in the shop.
