SAINT OF THECOMING WEEK - Saint Laurence O’Toole (1128-1180)

Laurence was born in Kildare in 1128. He was appointed Abbot of Glendalough at the age of26. He became an Augustinian Canon himself. He was elected Archbishop of Dublin at 32. He invited the Augustinian Friars to Dublin. During his time as Archbishop, the foundation stone of Christ Church Cathedral was laid. Laurence led a Reform Movement within the Church of the time, bringing it in line with more European practices. He led tense negotiations between the local Gaelic population and the Normans. In 1179, he left Ireland for the Fourth Lateran Council in Rome. Laurence died at the Abbey of St. Victor at Eu, Normandy on14th December 1180. Laurence’s heart lies in a reliquary in Christ Church Cathedral. This heart was stolen in 2012 but was later recovered in the Phoenix Park in 2018. The sacred relic is now back safely in the Cathedral.

THECOMMUNICATION WORKERS BAND plays today at 11am Mass instead of the choir. The mass is offered for deceased members of the Band.

CWU Band is the only remaining trade union band on the island of Ireland, north or south. The Band was founded by postal workers during the period prior to the foundation of the State. The exact date of the foundation of the Band is hard to verify, but it was in existence prior to 1916, as all the instruments were destroyed in the GPO during the Easter Rising.

For the last century the Post Office Workers’ Union Band has provided the beat to which many workers marched as they demonstrated against injustice or commemorated past heroes and events. With the amalgamation and consolidation of the many unions, the Band’s name has become the current Communications Workers’ Union Band.
